A Care Home for People with Dementia Has Been Opened

The company Südamekodud, which operates nursing homes, has opened a newly completed extension of the Käru nursing home, where 57 new residents will move into modern living conditions.

The company’s board member Martin Kukk said at the opening of the nursing home that, with an investment of around one million euros, a new service unit is being created to provide a comfortable and safe living environment for people with dementia. “In 2017, we made a commitment to the municipality to create additional care places, and the opening of the nursing home expansion confirms that we are keeping our promises,” added Kukk.

“We started planning the extension of the nursing home at the end of 2016, and a year and a half later, after preparing the initial brief, design, and construction, we have reached the point where we can open the doors of our new nursing home to more than fifty new residents,” said Käru Südamekodu manager Heili Burmeister. The nursing home extension is designed to ensure that elderly people with dementia can live and move comfortably in Käru – safe walking paths with signage will be created, and the interior design will take into account the needs of people with memory impairments.

“Soon we will also build a secure fence around the building, with special areas created for planting and other leisure activities, as well as cozy spots for walkers to rest,” added Heili Burmeister. According to Burmeister, the biggest challenge in expanding the nursing home is the shortage of workforce. “Finding professional and motivated team members is one of the biggest challenges, but I believe we will manage step by step. We work closely with the Unemployment Insurance Fund and actively participate in job fairs to promote the professions of activity instructor and caregiver,” she added.

The expansion of the nursing home will also create at least 15 new jobs in Türi municipality.

The private nursing home operator Südamekodud invested nearly one million euros in the expansion of Käru Südamekodu, the main contractor was Haart Ehitus, and the expansion was financed in cooperation with LHV Bank.
