On Thursday, November 8, Kunda marked a historic moment — the city’s very first elevator was installed at Kunda Südamekodu.
The ribbon at the opening ceremony was cut by Südamekodud Council Chairman Martin Kukk and Kunda Südamekodu Manager Derry Vimberg. Former managers of the care home also attended the event.
For the Kunda Südamekodu family, the elevator is an important and long-awaited addition. It significantly eases daily life for both residents and staff, and now those living on the second floor can easily access the surrounding garden for walks. As the elevator is located on the building’s exterior and features glass walls, passengers can enjoy scenic views of the care home grounds during the ride.
Südamekodud has been operating in Kunda since 2019. The care home provides 24-hour general care services for elderly people and individuals with mild disabilities, both for temporary and permanent stays. The home accommodates 63 residents supported by 27 staff members. Kunda Südamekodu has been continuously developed — the building’s exterior was renovated in 2019, and part of the interior was refreshed in 2022. The existing orchard will be expanded next year with a decorative garden and new recreation areas.
Südamekodud is Estonia’s largest provider of elderly care services, operating 11 care homes across the country. In addition to Kunda, the group’s homes are located in Kohtla-Järve, Valkla, Käru, Paide, Piigaste, Värska, Lihula, Saaremaa, and Tallinn (Merivälja and Pirita). Südamekodud is actively expanding — this summer, a new wing opened at Valkla Südamekodu; by the end of the year, an extension will be completed at Lihula Südamekodu; and in July 2024, the first stage of a brand-new Tartu Südamekodu will open in the Raadi district.
