Nõmme Südamekodu, currently being completed on Hiiu Street in the Nõmme district of Tallinn, has reached the final stage of construction and furnishing, and preparations for opening the home have begun. The thirteenth home of Estonia’s largest elderly care home network, Südamekodud, will open its doors in September, with the first residents expected to move in within a couple of months.

According to Nõmme Südamekodu Manager Klarika Kallikorm-Rannamets, a modern and home-like living environment is being created among the pine trees of Hiiu, where older people can live safely and with dignity while receiving the care and support they need.

“It is estimated that around 600 people in Tallinn and Harju County are currently waiting for a care place. This number shows how great the need is for new care places. With the opening of Nõmme Südamekodu, we are creating a home for 170 older people beside a pine forest – in a very peaceful location, while still offering the benefits and accessibility of an urban environment,” said Meelis Mälberg, Member of the Management Board of Südamekodud AS.

“We have reached the stage where the building is taking on its final appearance, and very soon we will welcome the first residents. Our goal is to create a place where older people can live an active and meaningful life, interact with others and receive exactly the level of support they need,” added Kallikorm-Rannamets.

Nõmme Südamekodu was established at Hiiu 42, where the building of the National Institute for Health Development was renovated. The elderly care home occupies the five-storey section of the building complex. The home will have capacity for up to 170 residents, making it one of the larger and more modern elderly care homes in Estonia.

In the three-storey section of the building, Tallinn Diaconal Hospital, which is part of the North Estonia Medical Centre, will continue its operations, including the provision of palliative and rehabilitation care.
