The refurbishment of the third building wing at Valkla Südamekodu, previously unused, has been completed. The renewed and modern living spaces will soon become home to up to 80 seniors. Across its three separate wings, Valkla Südamekodu now provides a home for a total of 228 seniors.
“Standing here today in Valkla and opening this C-wing gives me a complete déjà-vu feeling — I was here as well when we opened this wing 22 years ago. Yet what truly makes any place special and a real home are the people who work here and create its atmosphere. My sincere thanks and admiration to the Südamekodud team and everyone working here,” said Kuusalu municipality mayor Terje Kraanvelt.
“A modern care home is not merely a care institution, but a home — a place where a person’s dignified ageing, needs and natural rhythm of life are valued. For this purpose, we continuously develop both the content of our service and the physical environment to meet the expectations of people and their loved ones,” said the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Südamekodud AS Martin Kukk. “The need for places in care homes remains very high — people are waiting far too long. Südamekodud is both building new homes and expanding existing ones to ease the shortage of available places.”
Valkla Südamekodu is a modern care home for 228 people. During the renovation works, the existing building wings were upgraded. The refurbishment included improvements to technical systems, an updated interior environment, and new furnishings.
Südamekodu started operating in Valkla in 2022 with one building wing. The second wing opened in the summer of 2023, and now, in the spring of 2025, the third wing will soon be filled with residents. Valkla Südamekodu features a spacious reception area for guests, a café, shared leisure and family meeting rooms, as well as staff facilities. The house has its own kitchen, and the large outdoor area includes seating areas and terraces. In addition to regular care staff, the home is supported by a chaplain, nurses, and activity coordinators.
The year 2025 will also bring new developments in other Südamekodud homes — at the beginning of June, 30 new service places will open in Saaremaa and the main building lobby will be renovated, adding a cosy café and a lift. Tartu Südamekodu will receive 60 new service places in the summer, and construction will begin in Hiiu, Tallinn, on the Nõmme Südamekodu, which will become the group’s 13th care home and provide modern living conditions for up to 170 seniors.
